Ian shares a series of 12 virtual garden drawings framed in plastic and aluminium; with titles like Pasture on the Bay and Rainbow — these prints are composed from hand-drawn elements, grafted icons, shimmering silhouettes, and a synthesis of colour tuned to a frequency of nature, abundance, soils, skies, and creatures. A set of colourized plaster assemblages are pressed from crystalline basaltic sand and overlaid with silicone charms, castings issued from a wondrous water. The virtual garden drawings contnue on the third floor, in The Corridor Gallery. Bree approaches her work like a visual journal, inspired by everyday observations, popular culture, and ancient art. In this selection of works on paper and hand-built sculpture, Bree’s direct, playful, and expressive compositions give a glimpse of the artists overture including flowers, birds, cats, and glamorous figures. Reminiscent of billboards, posters, or comic strips, the oil paintings on paper form a colourful collection of works made between 2020-2023, full of free-associative imagery and text. In 2019 the artists returned to Ian’s hometown Scots Bay, on Plekteaq (the Bay of Fundy). They live, work, and grow, here in Mi’kma’ki, alongside their newborn Valentine. <img width="3822" height="2774" width_o="3822" height_o="2774" patterns and designs. Musical chimes echo through the hallways, and lead you toward a cool breeze. It’s difficult to remember which direction leads you back home, but every symbol and character painted on the wall shares a story that takes you on a new path.” A circuit that re-orients chromatic texts through mathematical systems and digital animations; Colour Maze is inspired by romanesque frescoes, maze chapbooks from the 90s, and colour phenomenon detailed within Dark Age era texts like ‘The Mabinogion’. This movement based program uses Markov chains and gestural parameters to alter the visible colour-field while developing a path in constant flux. The environment features an ambient remixed sound-track that echoes Hildegard Von Bingen and Takashi Kokubo entitled ‘A stone of many virtues, so that water is queen’ 2:57.The more time you spend in the maze, the more animations and color combinations you get. At first, the butterfly moves leaving a colored trail. Each time you cross the boundaries of your current area, the program generates new supporting animations that light up the front display where previous sections are rewritten, and a new path opens up for you. Find the hidden boxes to generate new visions – each of them contains a collection of color vignettes, verses and texts taken from historical manuscripts and recomposed by a Markov chain. The user is portrayed as animated butterfly. Controls via keyboard (WASD / Arrows) or touch-screen gestures. Please turn your volume ONWeb-friendly Javascript compatible with most browsers and devices.Lead Programmer: Jonah McKayVideographer: Malachy Schwartz <img width="639" height="629" width_o="639" height_o="629" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/614e52d4648e4c642076cac1bc5e0cacbf544250ef182a3b88271d288bc8b84b/fieldtrip04.jpg" data-mid="188976294" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/639/i/614e52d4648e4c642076cac1bc5e0cacbf544250ef182a3b88271d288bc8b84b/fieldtrip04.jpg" /> &nbsp; I collaborated with programmer Jonah McKay, to create a computer program that generates a series of heraldic crests and colour combinations based on drawings. On-board computers handle the emblem generating program and send the results as video to each projection surface at a rate of approximately 150 milliseconds. Results are saved to a growing database consisting of over 20,000 unique motifs, The optical illusion 'pepper's ghost' provides a mock hologram type experience when observing the generator viewports.&nbsp; Death Dancer https://ianfunkemckay.com/Death-Dancer Fri, 25 Aug 2023 17:33:01 +0000 ianfunkemckay.com https://ianfunkemckay.com/Death-Dancer 1&nbsp;Death Dancer, at the Confederation Centre of the Arts 2 Works on paper 64” x 64”, Anthem, Priest, Death Dancer <img width="2100" height="1395" width_o="2100" height_o="1395" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/aa63c09c8e7af77942d216abe4ede061bea1e1da344dad5c77c3bc41174014c0/16_NSCAD.jpg" data-mid="188976003" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/aa63c09c8e7af77942d216abe4ede061bea1e1da344dad5c77c3bc41174014c0/16_NSCAD.jpg" /> <img width="1860" height="2000" width_o="1860" height_o="2000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f0cccdccbff5922d9c176f4071cb94445cf6bdfecc3f49331cb6f7da69a30205/17_NSCAD.jpg" data-mid="188976061" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f0cccdccbff5922d9c176f4071cb94445cf6bdfecc3f49331cb6f7da69a30205/17_NSCAD.jpg" /> <img width="2000" height="2000" width_o="2000" height_o="2000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/202fae15bc53e1945a914b264e4e81ea5897f3a7b3065c8b7331031f201ab4bf/21_NSCAD.jpg" data-mid="188976071" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/202fae15bc53e1945a914b264e4e81ea5897f3a7b3065c8b7331031f201ab4bf/21_NSCAD.jpg" /> <img width="1999" height="2000" width_o="1999" height_o="2000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/46379c94eb45bd7e8e84b0e191352c4c42fe6b50abfa04835e9664cccd433d1c/19_NSCAD.jpg" data-mid="188976115" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/46379c94eb45bd7e8e84b0e191352c4c42fe6b50abfa04835e9664cccd433d1c/19_NSCAD.jpg" /> <img width="1702" height="1706" width_o="1702" height_o="1706" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/29e674ff44cf0ce3724c228632b3577bed86479d22d444c770e192901a4d8528/20_NSCAD.jpg" data-mid="188976120" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/29e674ff44cf0ce3724c228632b3577bed86479d22d444c770e192901a4d8528/20_NSCAD.jpg" /> <img width="1874" height="2000" width_o="1874" height_o="2000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/70f3ef156cc8fa3012138c24104bc96e5cde0f7a154e93c1d5531b2daead9b63/18_NSCAD.jpg" data-mid="188976121" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/70f3ef156cc8fa3012138c24104bc96e5cde0f7a154e93c1d5531b2daead9b63/18_NSCAD.jpg" /> Invisible Bright Touch https://ianfunkemckay.com/Invisible-Bright-Touch Fri, 25 Aug 2023 17:33:00 +0000 ianfunkemckay.com https://ianfunkemckay.com/Invisible-Bright-Touch Vermont Studio Centre, VT, USA Discovery Centre, Halifax, Canada <img width="2800" height="2428" width_o="2800" height_o="2428" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/06889064b2170d815ee8799ac5b59965f54ff44bd861f488352e352dcacd5fbb/14_NSCAD.jpg" data-mid="189002121" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/06889064b2170d815ee8799ac5b59965f54ff44bd861f488352e352dcacd5fbb/14_NSCAD.jpg" /> <img width="984" height="1200" width_o="984" height_o="1200" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9d42ff6c3f635697c0f815d625c5892f8af25972b938877c39492482b0b81c5f/014b_NSCAD.jpg" data-mid="189002128" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/984/i/9d42ff6c3f635697c0f815d625c5892f8af25972b938877c39492482b0b81c5f/014b_NSCAD.jpg" /> <img width="2138" height="2138" width_o="2138" height_o="2138" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3dc7c859c106666f3ef8493a20e86297508decf56bc2bc19c1fb8a6c3f95be7e/15_NSCAD.jpg" data-mid="189002132" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3dc7c859c106666f3ef8493a20e86297508decf56bc2bc19c1fb8a6c3f95be7e/15_NSCAD.jpg" /> <img width="2000" height="2023" width_o="2000" height_o="2023" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4003f0273fb39221e1fbfa5a79a2f8bcec615aa78f1f560e68f4710b2526f2ca/installgram2.jpg" data-mid="189002365" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4003f0273fb39221e1fbfa5a79a2f8bcec615aa78f1f560e68f4710b2526f2ca/installgram2.jpg" /> <img width="4012" height="2619" width_o="4012" height_o="2619" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7ffb1daa09ec3efe16ccbfbe94855f7f85e32fe4a34fa74e2004223157cf3a18/DSC_1985.jpg" data-mid="189002399" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7ffb1daa09ec3efe16ccbfbe94855f7f85e32fe4a34fa74e2004223157cf3a18/DSC_1985.jpg" /> <img width="2000" height="1989" width_o="2000" height_o="1989" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/60212fd4271c61d070a817f79e58e6d57b62c66ba16f0716f257ecea551b83ed/00-press-release-detail.jpg" data-mid="189002417" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/60212fd4271c61d070a817f79e58e6d57b62c66ba16f0716f257ecea551b83ed/00-press-release-detail.jpg" />
